Death toll climbs to 3 from Guatemala volcano

On friday reports say the death toll from a Guatemalan volcano has risen to 3. Two of the people killed were villagers from a near by village and one was a news report from CNN. These victims were crushed by large rock thrown from the mouth of the volcano as it errupted. 4 people are still missing after the evacuation of near villages and some 1,800 people are located in shelters around the area. The volcano, Pacaya, has been dormant since 1965 and is at an elevation of 8,373 feet.

I thought this was a sad story. Its sad that there are people missing that that people have lost their family members. But I do find one thing interesting. The volcano had been dormant for so long, i wonder why it errupted?

Rescue continues in Peru after ferry capsizing

After a Ferry carrying more that 150 people capsizes in the Amaxon River, rescuers have started there search again on Thursday morning. The ferry was overloaded with too many people that it capsized. 12 people were found dead already and more are thought to be dead as well. No search for bodies will start until Friday.

I think this is an interestiong story. i don't understand why the people who were incharge of the ferry allowed too many people to get on the ferry. If they would have not exceeded the limit of people, the ferry probably wouldn't have capsized and all the people would still be alive today.

Hurricane season could be 'active or extremely active'

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administation, they predict that the next summer and fall seasons will be "active of extremely active" for hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean region. They think there will be 14 and 23 storms with high winds of more than 39 miles per hour, 3-7 of which will be major hurricanes within the next 6 months after June 1.

I find this to be an interesting article because it talks about the weather and how it is constantly changing and very unpredictable. I think that the rise in hurricanes is due to the change in the environment due to polution. I also think the increase in hurricanes will greatly effect our economy and the helpfulness of people around the world.

Distress of 9/11 may have led to miscarriages, research says

This article talks about misscarages after the 9/11 attacks. Researchers just released information that suggests that due to higher levels of stress and shock in September 2001, there were a higher amount of miscarages mainly of male fetuses. This reduced the number of boys born in september and the following months. A researcher found that since the male fetus hormones are more effected by stressors than female, that explains the drop in male birth in the few months following the 9/11 attacks.

I found this article interesting because it was just released 9 years after the 9/11 attacks. I also learned that male hormones are more effected by stressors that females. i found this very interesting.

Some Chicago mothers mark day with tears for slain children

Yesterday was Mother's Day and most moms were being thanked and celebrating with there children, but in Chicago, several moms were mourning the lose of their children due to street violence from the past year. These mothers went to their church where a new statue was placed to honor the children that had lost there lives too soon.

This is a sad story. I don't think any mother should have to go through that any day, especially on Mother's Day. I do think it is great that the church and community made the statue to honor the children.

Jobs and Welfare Blog Entry

Issue #1 talked about "All Things Being Unequal". This issue talked about the increase in difference between the lower class and the higher classes. The gap between the classes has increase dramatically since 1979. The percent of households in the upper class has increased from 45.4% to 53.5% and the percentage of income for lower classes has decreased form 5.8% to 4.1% since 1979. These percents show how much the gap between classes has grown dramatically. This issue also talks about if the wages should be created equal to lessen the gap between the classes. It said that if this is done it will create less motivation and that the difference in salaries and distace between classes is good for the economy. The increase betweeen classes is ppartial due to outsourcing. one way that this can be fixed is by Creating Wealth.

I think that it would be a good idea to make the wages for the classes more even. This would prevent people from being evicted and would make many things easier and mor affordable for everyone. Even though the difference between classes helps the economy, I think the government should take more care of all the citizens not just the high class ones.

Meet Sandra Bullock's baby boy!

It turns out that Sandra Bullock and Jesse James began an adoption process about 4 months ago. They were keeping the adoptiona secret until after the Oscars. The new baby is about 3 1/2 months old and his name is Louis Bardo Bullock. They kept this joyful news a secret with the help of Jesse's 3 children. After Bullock and James split due to his apparent cheating, Bullock is being a single mother of her new son, who she says "He's perfect, I can't even describe him in any other way."

I think this is a cool story because of the fact that they adopted a child. I think adoption is a great thing to do. Giving a child a good home is probably the best gift that could ever be given to a child.
